Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Indian artifacts

Anza-Borrego is a great place to search for evidence of the ancient ones. Various Indian artifacts, including morteros and pictographs, are visible in many areas of the park. Good concentrations are at Indian Hill, Little Blair Valley, Piedras Grandes, and Harper Flat. Old fish traps are visible along the ancient shoreline of the Salton Sea to the east of Anza-Borrego. Remember all artifacts are irreplaceable and protected by law; some pictographs have been defaced and lost forever. Take only photographs.

Slot Canyons and Mud Caves

Slot Canyon in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
A number of slot canyons await exploration. Several canyons become “slots” for various distances in the Palm Wash region, including the Middle and South Forks of Palm Wash, along with some tributaries. This area, between county road S22 and the old Calcite Mine, is arduous but wonderful for exploration. Another narrow canyon known as “The Slot” is reached from CA 78 near the middle of the park. Mud caves (think slot canyons with a ceiling) are concentrated in Arroyo Tapiado. These are some of the most extensive mud cave formations anywhere in the world.
