Andros, Bahamas

Caves

Andros has a number of dry caves (which occur above sea level, whereas Blue Holes occur below sea level). These typically require some local knowledge to find. Many adult residents of Andros seem to harbor a superstitious fear of caves, and the younger generation may be more helpful in locating a cave. Legends of pirate treasure, often associated with the Pirate Morgan, who frequented Andros, abound.

Blue Holes

Blue Holes, or underwater caves or pits, are present on both land and in the sea. On land, they form natural swimming pools, with fresh water on the surface overlying salt water far below. When the openings of Blue Holes occur in the ocean, they may appear as "springs" or"syphons", depending upon whether water is rushing into them or out of them, which changes with the tides.

Inland

Much of the interior of Andros is either forested or swampy. The Caribbean pine forest on Andros has been logged from one end to the other, and the interior still yields the scars of the network of logging roads. Except for the occasional Blue Hole, there is not much to see or do.
